The 1st Conference of Danxia Geomorphology Working Group of IAG & the 2nd International Symposium on Danxia Landform
Notification of Conference Grants for Graduate Student Participation
In order to encourage and motivate young scholars to devote themselves to the study of Danxia landform, the organizing committee of the First Conference of Danxia Geomorphology Working Group of IAG & the Second International Symposium on Danxia Landform will sponsor 30 graduate students participating in the conference (including graduate students who graduated in 2011 but unemployed). Graduate students from home and abroad are welcome to register for the conference.
Funding organization: Administrative Committee of Danxiashan National Park (World Natural Heritage site, Global Geopark) will provide sponsorship. All applications will be reviewed by the Conference Executive Committee.
1. Types of Subvention
Type A: full financial subvention (Ten students in total)
Total amount that each applicant will be sponsored will not exceed RMB 8000 ($1,200).
The number of domestic applicants shall not exceed 1/3 of the total quota; full subvention program covers round-trip transportation expenses, registration fees, accommodation and investigation fees. Fieldtrip fees after the conference will not be included.
Type B: partial financial subvention (Ten students in total)
Total amount that each applicant will be sponsored will not exceed RMB 4000 ($600).
The number of domestic applicants shall not exceed 1/3 of the total quota; partial financial subvention covers round-trip transportation expenses, registration fees, accommodation and investigation fees. Fieldtrip fees after the conference will not be included.
Type C: partial financial subvention (Ten students in total)
Financial support to domestic applicants shall not exceed 1/2 of the total. This subvention program includes registration fees, accommodation fees and investigation fees. Round-trip transportation expenses and fieldtrip fees after the conference will not be included.
2. Conditions for Support
(1) All PhD and Master Students (from home and abroad) majoring in Earth Science or other relevant programs are qualified to apply by submission of enrollment verification, professional confirmation and a recommendation letter from supervisor.
(2) Applicants are required to submit an extended abstract of 500-800 words (or 800-1200 words if in Chinese) for this conference (no word limit on attached picture or figure). The study should relate to one of the major topics of the conference.
3. Priorities
(1) Priority will be given to applicants who are engaged in relevant researches on Danxia landform (red beds or red sandstone). Detailed study plan or proposal is required.
(2) In the purpose of promoting basic research, Priority will be given to researches involving typical case study, advanced technique application or constructive contribution on red beds and Danxia Landform. Subvention on basic research will account for 2/3 of the total budget. Researches on theoretical study, global comparison, comprehensive and application analysis are also highly encouraged.
(3) Applicant has experience in the research of red bed, Danxia landform or relevant research will be given priority for financial assistance. Documents to prove research achievements are required such as certification or paper published.
(4) Priority will be given to applicant who has received nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards in research on Danxia Landform or in other relevant field. Award certificates or Verifications need to be provided.
4. Application and screening process
(1) All application forms and required documents must be submitted no later than August 20th 2011. No submission will be accepted after the deadline.
(2) All Applications will be carefully reviewed and evaluated by the committee. Hereby different types of subvention fund will be determined.
(3) The committee will notify applicants of the final determination on their application by August 31st.
5. Other Requirements
(1) All applicants to be subsidized are required to submit formal paper no later than September 30th. Please refer to Attachment 2 on Conference Circular website for detailed requirements. (http://www.dxdm.com/IAG-DX/EN/14_1.html)
(2) Applicants of subvention Type A and B should prepay your round-trip transportation fees. The reimbursement will be processed at conference desk once original receipts are received. Applicants of Type C would have to cover transportation fees by themselves.
(3) Chinese students studying abroad (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) are treated as foreign applicants. Those students are required to concentrate their case study in other areas rather than in China and the total amount of eligible applicants for admission will not exceed 1/3 of the total subsidized foreign graduate students. Graduate students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are to be considered as domestic applicants. Foreign Graduate Students studying in China are to be treated as foreign applicants.
(4) Domestic applicants are required to submit an extended abstract both in Chinese and English, while foreign applicants only need to provide an English abstract. Bilingual abstract will be always welcome (optional for foreign applicants).
